Pain Mitigation Roundtable: Presentation of novel elastrator band
StarFish Medical Biotech Manager, Nick Allan, presented to thirty-two livestock industry professionals and stakeholders taking part in a daylong conversation around strategies to mitigate pain for livestock. Nick spoke about the recent development of a novel elastrator band that releases topical analgesia for improved pain mitigation during castration. Castration is an important tool in modern agriculture helping producers to manage their livestock performance, along with animal health and safety. Lidocaine is a local anesthetic that is often injected during castration procedures to help manage pain. The Wulff lab has worked with Nick Allan in a NSERC Engage project to evaluate the amount of lidocaine loaded into different sized castration bands using GC-MS, LC-MS and HPLC techniques, and these results will be summarized and presented.

Professor Oscar Nespoli, P.Eng., requested the topic for his graduate class on Special Topics in Advanced Machine Design Methods: Advanced Design Engineering.
Part of Canada’s largest engineering school, the Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering department at the University of Waterloo is home to nearly 1600 undergraduates, graduate students, faculty and staff. Design Control Conference: Scott Phillips - faculty member
The Design Control Conference from Medical Device Summit will take place February 4-5, 2015, in Washington D.C. Billed as A Competitive Advantage from R&D through Postmarket, this highly interactive workshop features top industry experts and goes beyond the basic principles and processes of design control. StarFish Medical President, Scott Phillips, will participate as a member of the Design Control Faculty.
The conference focuses on the creation of a strong design control program that is well integrated into all relevant company functions and has the appreciation and support of business management.

Institute of Corporate Directors: Scott Phillips panelist
StarFish Medical President, Scott Phillips will be a panelist on The value of advisory boards for smaller companiesat a November 5, 2014, Institute of Corporate Directors Victoria event. Michel Bergeron (Development Bank of Canada – BCD) and Daniela Cubelic (Silk Road Tea) will also participate.
Mr. Bergeron will share the results and insights from new research on the entrepreneurs’ use of advisory boards and boards of directors. The panelists will discuss the strategic value of adding expertise and counsel and how to get it.

LifeSciences BC/ Henan Medical Device Association: Scott Phillips speaks
Scott Philips will speak at a day long event LifeSciences BC is hosting for a delegation of senior executives from China’s medical device sector. The event will take place in Vancouver BC on October 29, 2014.
The delegation will consist of 21 executives representing 13 companies who are members of the Henan Medical Device Association, a not-for-profit industry association located in central China. The executives are interested in identifying potential collaboration and investment opportunities in British Columbia. StarFish Medical is a member of LifeSciences BC.

Alberta Biomedical Engineering Conference: Scott Phillips Panelist
John Walmsley, StarFish Medical VP Product Development, will be a panelist in “Working in the biomedical and health sector” on Thursday, October 23. The panel is targeted to Science, Engineering, Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education, and Human and Social Development students at the University of Victory (UVic) as part of the “What can you do with your degree” series organized by Co-op and Career Services. The series helps students and recent graduates gain a better understanding of what kinds of careers they can pursue after graduation, as well as gain insight about steps they can take to succeed in landing jobs in relevant industries post–graduation.
