StarFish Medical CEV Winnipeg Ventilator Design Wins Gold in 2020 International Design Awards
VICTORIA, British Columbia and TORONTO, Ontario, January 29, 2021 – StarFish Medical announces the CEV Winnipeg Ventilator design team wins Gold in the Industrial And Life Science Design / Medical/Scientific Machinery category of the 2020 International Design Awards (IDA) competition. The 2020 winners were announced by IDA today.
StarFish Medical designed a Health Canada certified ventilator in 6 months (normally a multi-year effort). The design was constrained to speed development of a system that is easy to use, manufacture, and accessible to both developed and developing nations alike. The project was developed for the Canadian Government in response to the Covid-19 pandemic as a multi-mode ICU ventilator that could save patients’ lives, be manufactured locally in the shortest time possible, and not disrupt the supply chain for existing ventilators. It is based on the pioneering work of Dr. Magdy Younes.
John Walmsley, StarFish Medical EVP of Strategic Relationships and ventilator program manager, shared the news with the project team stating, “I am thrilled to learn that the StarFish Medical design team for the CEV Winnipeg Ventilator has won a Gold Industrial Design Award in the 2020 International Design Awards. One of the jurors captured the magnitude of this effort with her comment, ‘An impressive R&D journey, with a very fast turnaround’. My thanks and congratulations to Niall Redmond and the Industrial Design Team of Paul Charlebois, Hannah Rusak-Gillrie, Tim Park, and Christian McMechan. Well done everybody involved!”
“Absolutely outstanding, great to see all your hard work get recognized! Congratulations to everyone who helped make this such a success!” noted Petter Hansson, General Manager, Canadian Emergency Ventilators (CEV).
The 2020 International Design Awards (IDA) was the most successful in its 14-year history, attracting thousands of outstanding designs submitted by companies and designers around the world competing for the top prizes in this prestigious award. The IDA winners were announced today. Evaluating submissions from more than 80 countries, the IDA jury saw entries exhibiting the highest current design standards across five Award Disciplines: Architecture, Interior, Product, Graphic and Fashion Design. Each design entry was evaluated by the professional IDA Jury panel on its own merit.
