Program Director

As the Program Director, you will assume a distinctive and pivotal role, overseeing a multi-million-dollar portfolio of intricate medical device development. This presents a rare chance to potentially transform patient care for a diverse range of esteemed clients. To excel in this role, a degree in engineering or physical science and over 15 years of consulting or client-facing experience managing a similar complex medical device development portfolio is a prerequisite. Your ability to effectively guide teams and clients through these challenges is paramount, as it empowers you to make a significant impact in the field, enhancing patient care and advancing medical technology.

As the Program Director, you will bring energy, passion, and exceptional skill to help StarFish grow new and existing programs. This role primarily manages portfolios and programs, focusing on delivering value and driving growth. You will serve as the principal Trusted Advisor to a portfolio of StarFish’s customers, leading them to successful business outcomes by assessing their needs and leading the StarFish team in developing and delivering compelling solutions that create real business value.

You are adept at building and maintaining meaningful trust-based relationships with everyone you work with, from customers to technical teams to suppliers. This skill is crucial in crafting a strategic vision and leading competent teams to accomplish this while navigating the inevitable challenges of innovation, new product development and organization-wide initiatives.

Your people leadership abilities will be fully showcased as you manage a team of direct reports and lead others in the organization through influence to grow and deliver a sizable portfolio of StarFish programs. You will have the accountability and authority to staff your team appropriately to meet revenue and profitability targets.

Responsibilities

  • Grow the StarFish portfolio by identifying customer needs, matching these with compelling proposals and successfully securing sales.
  • Build trust-based relationships with new and existing clients inside your portfolio, leading them to meaningful value-based outcomes.
  • Lead, develop, motivate and mentor exceptionally talented program managers, project managers, project analysts and other support staff. This includes critical functions such as recruitment, employee development and overall team resource management.
  • Once underway, steer programs through the entire lifecycle, including managing the baseline and navigating inevitable change.
  • Predominantly remain “out of the project weeds” instead of managing through other project-based team members to leverage your abilities for the highest-value offerings to the organization.
  • Initiate and oversee project issue resolution development and recovery as needed.
  • Provide regular reports to support business needs within StarFish and external (program health, P&L and other key metrics).
  • Accountable for the overall program and project management process, including contracts, program organization, resourcing, plan development, scope management and risk mitigation.
  • Promote innovation by creating space and inspiring ideation to elevate our client’s vision.
  • Foster highly effective cross-departmental and cross-functional relationships within StarFish.
  • Contribute to developing processes, procedures, and training material and deploy training to other staff members.

Qualifications, Skills & Attributes

  • Post-Secondary diploma/degree (or equivalent) in Engineering, Sciences.
  • At least 15 years of relevant experience managing similar complex medical device development portfolios.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities.
  • Excellent negotiator; skilled in securing approvals for program budgets, charters, proposals, etc.
  • Exceptional ability to communicate complex technical, product and commercial messages to various audiences. This includes verbal, visual (in presentations & infographics) and written (messaging & reports).
  • Curiosity and drive to understand clients’ businesses, technologies, and needs.
  • Creativity and a problem-solving mentality to design and adapt programs to meet clients’ needs.
  • Ability to thrive in an environment of ambiguity and uncertainty.
  • Quick to pick up new technologies and incorporate on-the-fly change of plans.
  • Knowledge of medical device development in an ISO 13485 or other regulated industry is an asset.
  • Consulting experience is an asset.
