In collaboration with StarFish Medical, the University of Victoria’s BME program is offering third and fourth year students a course on Human Factors and Usability Engineering in the Spring 2023. The course, BME 401C – Human Factors and Usability Engineering for Medical Devices will cover the regulatory framework and regulatory standards for developing medical devices as well as the human factors associated with biomedical device design, including ergonomics and usability. This marks the fifth year of collaboration.

Pain Mitigation Roundtable: Presentation of novel elastrator band


StarFish Medical Biotech Manager, Nick Allan,  presented  to thirty-two livestock industry professionals and stakeholders taking part in a daylong conversation around strategies to mitigate pain for livestock. Nick spoke about the recent development of a novel elastrator band that releases topical analgesia for improved pain mitigation during castration.  Nick worked on the project in his role as President of Chinook Contract Research Inc. StarFish provided assistance with prototypes.  The event and research were sponsored by Alberta Farm Animal Care. The workshop was held in High River, AB on June 24, 2019.

102nd Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition: Poster Session

 

A poster titled Evaluation of Lidocaine Content and Delivery from Latex Elastrator Bands Using LC-MS, GC-MS and HPLC Techniques co-authored by StarFish Medical Biotech Manager, Nick Allan, will be presented at the 102nd Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition, Quebec, QC 2019.

Castration is an important tool in modern agriculture helping producers to manage their livestock performance, along with animal health and safety.  Lidocaine is a local anesthetic that is often injected during castration procedures to  help manage pain. The Wulff lab has worked with Nick Allan in a NSERC Engage project to evaluate the amount of lidocaine loaded into different sized castration bands using GC-MS, LC-MS and HPLC techniques, and these results will be summarized and presented.

CUBE is a student-run club on campus whose mandate is to promote biomedical engineering at the undergraduate level. Case Study—Tales from Two FDA Inspections at Three Facilities
Most QA/RA professionals have attended generalized training on how to handle FDA inspections. However, few have participated in a real inspection from notification and preparation through inspection and follow-up. This case study examines three recent FDA inspections and is presented by a participant in the inspections. Highlights include a novel inspection strategy, lessons learned, preparation efforts, the actual inspections and inspection outcomes.

Risk Management
A detailed overview of the risk management process will be presented, including examples of tools and techniques used. Topics to be covered include:

  • ISO 14971 – Application of risk management to medical devices
  • ISO 13485 – Medical devices, quality management systems and requirements for regulatory purposes

University Health Network: Scott Phillips speaks about Serial Medtech Entrepreneurs


StarFish Medical President and Founder, Scott Phillips, will be speaking at UHN – University Health Network in Toronto, ON on September 24 as part of the TECHNA ROUNDS | INSTITUTE FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF TECHNOLOGY FOR HEALTH series.  The talk will take place from 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm at 100 College St, Banting Institute, Room 131.

Developed from early findings of the ongoing Serial Medical Device Entrepreneurs Project, Scott will share statistics and behaviours that help define a Serial Medical Device Entrepreneur.

Techna is an institute of University Health Network, in collaboration with the University of Toronto, focused on the accelerated development and exploitation of technology for improved health. Schulich Innovation Research Day: Scott Phillips to present Canadian landscape

Scott Phillips, StarFish Medical President and Founder, will present at the 3rd Schulich Innovation Research Day – Medical Devices Innovation Review on June 15, 2015  in Toronto, ON.  Produced by  Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, the event is open to industry, clinicians, scientists, and students interested in medical devices innovation and commercialization. 

Scott will be one of the morning session speakers providing discussions on various aspects of the current medical device design landscape in Canada, which will be followed by an interactive med-tech industry gaps session where Canada’s top serial medical technology entrepreneurs and social innovators will share their experiences.  Other speakers in the session include:

  • Mr. Steve Arless, Managing Partner, Medius International – He will lecture on entrepreneurship in the medtech field with the talk title “Inside the Mind of A Serial Entrepreneur”.
