Gastroenterology & Endoscopy News

The January 8, 2020, online edition of Gastroenterology & Endoscopy News features “In the Pipeline: A Capsule for Diagnosing SIBO“. Subheaded, “An experimental swallowable capsule may significantly improve the diagnosis and management of patients with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth,” the article discusses research presented in May 2019.

The article notes: “If ongoing clinical trials demonstrate the accuracy of the capsule in diagnosing SIBO, the device would meet a significant clinical need left open by two current diagnostic approaches: small intestinal aspiration, which is accurate but invasive, and breath testing, which is noninvasive but can be inaccurate.”

“If this capsule proves sensitive and specific, it will be a revolutionary tool for diagnosing SIBO,” said Satish Rao, MD, PhD, the Harrison Distinguished University Chair in Gastroenterology and director of neurograstroenterology and motility at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University, where the capsule is undergoing trials.
