VICTORIA, British Columbia, May 7, 2014 – StarFish Medical announces it has been selected as an Employer of the Year finalist for the 13th annual Victoria Advanced Technology Council (VIATeC) awards. The Employer of the Year award recognizes a company that has demonstrated its commitment to staff and provides a pleasant workplace.
Finalists are chosen from a survey given to current staff. The awards celebrate the achievements of technology companies responsible for making Greater Victoria the fastest growing technology region in B.C.
Scott Phillips, President of StarFish Medical: “We’re particularly honored to be listed as an Employer of the Year finalist because we work hard to create a unique culture and environment. The number one thing employees like about StarFish is the culture.”
Employees throughout the company confirm the unique culture and environment.
“Everyone here really, really wants to be here and they’re really good at what they do”, Christian McMechan, Biomedical Electrical Engineer.
Betsy Walker, Intermediate Accountant: “This is the first place I’ve ever worked at that everybody is so committed and involved. Everybody. If anyone has a problem, there’s no wrong answer.”
“From the top-down from the managers to the supervisors to the employees. Everyone is very communicative with each other and creates a really nice, open work environment. I have a lot of trust in the people that I work with”, Garrick Gunn, Assembly and Service Technician.
Annelies Tjebbes, QA Specialist: “Every morning we have a SCRUM and that’s where we can share anything that’s blocking anything. It helps you set out your goals and make sure you are going to have a productive day.”
“The flat hierarchy has been the big thing. Everybody feels they have a seat at the table”, Paul Charlebois, Industrial Designer.
VIATeC serves as the one-stop hub that connects people, knowledge and resources to grow and promote the Greater Victoria technology sector. This year, 49 companies and individuals are finalists in ten categories. The awards will be handed out at a gala evening June 20 at the Victoria Conference Centre. The finalists were selected from a total of 108 nominations.
Scott Phillips and StarFish Medical have previously won VIATeC awards in 2011 for Executive of the Year and in 2009 for Employee/Team of the Year. Executive of the Year recognizes an individual who has had a significant impact on the success of an organization as a direct result of their leadership. Employee/Team of the Year recognizes an individual or a team in the technology sector who demonstrates outstanding initiative and service delivery, and has had a significant impact on the company for which they work.
