MPO: 4 Ways to Mitigate Medical Device Risk with User-Centered Design

Medical Device Risk User-Centered Design

The November 9, 2023 online issue of Medical Product Outsourcing (MPO) features online exclusive, 4 Ways to Mitigate Medical Device Risk with User-Centered Design, written by Kate Dobson, StarFish Senior Human Factors Engineer. Dobson examines user-centered design (UCD), an iterative design process based on ISO 9241-210:2019, in which designers focus on users and their needs in each phase of the design process. By examining a series of recent examples, Dobson illustrates how UCD  helps to reduce risk and create medical products and systems that are intuitive, efficient, and safe for users.

Dobson concludes that UCD processes in medical device development are of “paramount importance”. Moreover, she shows how researching user requirements and conducting rigorous testing captures the device’s capabilities and embraces intrinsic human limitations.
